The stories are deeply philosophical and somewhat sci-fi-ish. His writing was revolutionary and provocative in his time. In our time though the stories loose quite a bit of their shocking nature, though they are still difficult to fully comprehend for much of the population, which unused to analytical thinking. Many people judge a book on its easy entertaining value, because they are unable to comprehend the deeper thoughts or are much too disturbed by them. So they steer clear of the dark satirical world of Kafka.

On a final note it should be said that his person-enigma "ownership" is uniquely Czech, as he was born in Czechoslovakia. He absorbed much of the Czech culture (sarcasm and the idea that life is various degrees of suffering) which became an inane part of his writing. He was born a Jew but like many influential Czech writers declared him self an atheist (quite a daring feat in his time). His writings (ownership) is disputed by 3 different countries, each having a good argument why Kafka was theirs. His works are now in Israel.
