Eleventh in the series. Crombie takes us to a different part of Great Britain for every book, and this one is set in Cheshire amongst the canals and the narrowboat culture. Duncan Kincaid of Scotland Yard and Gemma James of the Metropolitan Police have taken their kids to his parents for Christmas. Kincaid's sister, a builder, finds the mummified body of an infant walled up in an old barn she's renovating. While that investigation goes on, one of the narrowboat dwellers is savagely murdered near the barn, and Duncan's son Kit finds the body (poor Kit - he's still not recovered from finding his mother's body!). Add in an ugly marital feud, sullen teenagers, a scheming partner and it's not exactly a postcard holiday. Crombie gives us some nice red herrings, advances the relationship between Kincaid and James just a little bit, and provides some interesting bits about the narrowboats and the canals.
