Peter Rabbit teaches the reader to count to five with Halloween-themed items.

The one negative that leaps out at me about this book is the "shape." Like many "shaped" board books, the shape is "not rectangular," rather than some specific shape. This seems to me to be an attempt to have a novel appeal without doing the work of coming up with an actual novelty.

That aside, this is a cute little book. First, there's Peter Rabbit, whose appeal to children is generations long. Mom, Grandpa... they've read and loved Potter's stories and a chance to share this lovable character with a new generation is always one to take. Next, there's the size. This is an excellent book for taking along when you're out because it's small, and if you're one of those people who plan to put together a special little bag of treats for the little goblin in your life, this will fit right in. Then there's the education. Every chance you get to sneak that into their cartoon-obsessed little minds is awesome and counting is so much more fun with this book! Last, there's the actual novelty that's built into the book. The cover has some foil stars on it, as do the pages. While Peter is counting 2 spiders, you can also count two foil stars! It's just a nice touch that appeals to the "oh, shiny!" little corner of everyone's heart.

The text is simple, as are the colorful illustrations. The simplicity makes it easy to focus on the counting part, rather than on cluttered, detailed images or an overwhelming amount of text. The glossy board pages will withstand quite a bit of abuse and wipe clean with ease.
