The first section of this book (the East Africa poems) is unimpressive, more for people interested in the scope of her work and for how it's changed over the years than for people interested in good poetry. Walker herself wrote in the introduction that there were many things that she would have liked to change, but that she thought that she should leave them as she wrote them. That said, it is interesting to watch a young writer grow into her craft. By the end of the book, the poetry is quite good.
