In most Sci-Fi, as the alien hordes sweep in from the dark reaches of space to loot and destroy worlds, brave members of the resisting species rise up to defend their planets. Vast space armadas engage in terrible battles where the dead and dying ships and intelligent life forms are flung into oblivion. Be they the Space Marines or the Galactic Patrol, there will always be those who will fight hard and, if necessary, give their lives to defend their species and freedom.

But not in this book.

In this book, one intelligent being steps forward to save a species from itself and its world from ecological disaster. And that intelligent being is "just a cook."

The first part of the book is interesting, but somewhat listless. It's only after the cook is forced to leave Sector General hospital that it becomes a page turner.
