This was one of the first cookbooks I received as a young woman. It has been an invaluable resource for me over the years. I know I can count on this book to provide me with a delicious version of a recipe I need-lattice topped chicken bake, glazed ham balls, broccoli rice dish, rice pudding, bread pudding, or fantastic strawberry pie.
There are many local Pennsylvania Dutch recipes offered along with everyday suggestions for the home cook.
I use this book confident that the recipes have been tested and loved by the families of the women and men offering them to the authors.
The majority of the recipes are excellent for a beginner cook. The recipes are so good though that more experienced cooks will find them a reliable resource as well.
There is a lovely and informative history of the Central Market at the beginning that is continued throughout the book. Full color photographs illustrate the experience of being at the market. The authors also provide historical background through quotes from people who grew up going to the market and what it means to them.
This book stands out because the affection each contributor has for the Central Market and for their individual recipe shines through.
