The setting is in the late 19th century when spiritualism was very popular. Ruby has been raised by her father, a con man, who touted miracle elixirs and fake healings in Canada. She does tarot readings to support the two of them as her father spends his takings as fast as he gets them. When a miracle cure goes horribly wrong, he quickly abandons her and she flees to the aunt she never knew, her late mother's sister who runs a boarding house in Maine. Ruby finds out that the women in her mother's family have spiritual gifts. When murder occurs, Ruby is afraid her link with the death in Canada will be found out. The story dragged in some places and Ruby's paranoia about being accused of the Canada death seems a bit far fetched. Still an interesting look at spiritualism during that era.
