Sixth in the series, and okay to start here. This one goes back in time to when Samuel Craddock was the young, newly appointed Chief of Police in Jarrett Creek. It's a great addition to the series, showing Craddock at the very beginning of his career as a lawman, deciding what he believes in and how he's going to conduct himself. There will be effects on his wife and other members of his family that he didn't consider when he took the job. The mystery is not open and shut either. There are multiple villains here, some of them obvious and some not; small town politics will play a big part; and racism underlying all. I really liked how Shames portrays Craddock's wife Jeanne, she's got some flaws that are not hinted at in the previous books. Good pacing, good dialogue, good sense of place.
