Outstanding book giving the other side's perspective of a great battle during WWII. You get both a military perspective and human perspective of one of the great generals of this war. Knowing that defending Iwo was a "lost" cause, General Kuribayashi was able to inflict great hardship on the American forces, thereby postponing the eventual defeat of Japan. At the same time, he was able to communicate with his family from a distance, advising them of actions to take to live a comfortable and fulfilling life during times of strife. General Kuribayashi was both a father and husband while fulfilling his destiny as one of Japan's greatest military leaders.
