After really enjoying both the previous Kimberley Freeman novels I've read, I'm sorry to say I found EMBER ISLAND a surprising disappointment.
This one felt very uninspired. Both the past and present-day narratives were slow to start, featured rather annoying main characters and were repetitive to a fault. With Nina in the present-day storyline being especially so! A bestselling novelist suffering from writer's block (and for good reason as it turns out!) perhaps reflects the author's own experience writing this book...
The romances with both women were very cliché and of the "now I know my ABCs" Harlequin variety. What can I say? I was bored.
So while this in no way puts me off Kimberley Freeman, I would wholeheartedly recommend WILDFLOWER HILL or EVERGREEN FALLS instead.
2.75 stars.
