The heroine Miss Amanda Desmond has custody of a young boy whom she has raised since his birth. Now that custody is being challenged by a co-guardian. He insists that the boy should have a male presence to help mold him. Well, Amanda who is rich, doesn't want a husband, but is willing to pretend to be engaged/married and then get an annulment. The problem is who can she trust to go for the annulment, or she might find herself permanently married. Enter Andrew Farleigh, childhood friend and close friend of her cousin Jeremy. He offers to be the bridegroom, but inserts a clause that if the marriage is not annulled within 6 months it must stand. He has fallen in love with Amanda during his recuperation from a broken leg at her and her cousin's house. Interesting, good read, missed verbal sparring between the H/H.
