Miss Daphne Collingham goes undercover as a governess in the home of Lord Colton to investigate the suspicious death of her dear cousin Clarissa, Colton's wife and the mother of his three children, Lily, Edmund and Sophie. Clarissa had died as the result of a fall down the central staircase, and though no charges were brought, it is widely believed that Colton killed her. Even Colton believes this. They become lovers and it's up to Daphne to prove that Colton didn't do it if they and the kids are to have any future together.
Advisory: This is a rather unusual Harlequin Historical in that there is more romanticized sex sooner than usual in these stories -- still I found it readable and stayed to the end.
