Empress of the Night: A Novel of Catherine the Great

This book had great potential -- a skilled author, glittering historical setting and fascinating main character, Catherine the Great -- but the parts never fully come together to make a whole. The story begins with Catherine's impending death, then proceeds into a series of flashbacks about her past -- her husband, children, lovers, etc. The author's initial book on Catherine, "The Winter Palace" is a much stronger and more enjoyable tale. Not recommended. Note: This review is based upon an Advanced Readers Edition.
