This story is as unique as it is interesting. Most children know nothing about the small, wild animals that cohabit neighborhoods with us. However, kids are curious about animals, and this story presents the animal as approachable and worthy of saving.

I quibbled with allowing the possum to go to the riding school. Taking the possum that could harm someone's livelihood seemed a stupid thing to do. I would have explained that it could damage the horse stable owner's business and would have refused to take the chance of infecting the horses. I thought that was a teachable moment that was lost.
