This is a really good far-future post apocalypse book. It was a real surprise. I think it was written in the 70s but it doesn't affect this book's quality or entertaining value. I read it in one night!!!!
Basically after humans destroy the planet, about 10 thousand years later, humans have returned to Earth, but only for burial. The descendants of humans who fled to the stars return to "mother earth" to be buried. Earth is one huge cemetery.
