Barbara is told that she has no way to know if people like her for her money and position or for herself. The question bothers her so much that she takes up a new life as a working girl in another part of the country and ends up remaking herself and influencing others to do so too. Full of remarkable coincidences as books of this era tended towards, but great story about remaking identity, attitudes, and much more.
