Mark Treaure was in the little village of Mitchell Stoke to help his friend Arthur Moonlight regain his ancestral home, Mitchell Hall, from the reactionary Forward Britain movement. Moonlight sold them the estate, but now he's changed his mind, and he needs Treasure to help him buy it back. Real estate, though, takes a back seat to murder as Treasure delves into the history of Mitchell Hall.
What starts out as a relaxing country vacation quicky becomes something else. The search for a Shakespeare manuscript, and the confessions of a lusty sixteenth century diarist are pleasant diversions. The murdered gravedigger is another matter.
Finally, with the help of an eccentric young vicar and a Shakespears scholar with her own axe to grind, Treasure turns detective and solves the mystery of Mitchell Hall.
