I listened to an audio version of this book while recovering from eye surgery. I'm amazed at the rules the ton lived by. Camille and her mother and 3 siblings were put out when it was discovered that her father was not legally married to her mother. The daughter of his first wife who was put in an orphanage when she was 4 at the time of the "marriage" to the 2nd wife, is now returned to her rightful position in society. Camille goes to that same orphanage and becomes a teacher.
