This is a wondrous and entertaining book of tales and true stories of the frontier. You'll find the pages flying by.

Two of my favorites:

The frontier judge called the court into session. As one attorney began his opening argument, the other attorney yelled at him, "You're a lying, g--d--- son-of-a-b----!" The other attorney yelled back, "You're the lying, g--d--- son-of-a-b----!". With this the judge stated, "Now that the lawyers have gotten to know one another, let's begin the case."

In 1864, at a pow-wow with an Indian tribe, the whites, to impress the Indians, decided to fire a canon which was mounted sideways on the back of a mule, with the canon pointed towards a river. However, once the fuse was lit, the mule alarmed by the hissing of the fuse, began turning about in circles. Men dove for cover, some into the river, others running in all directions as the mule kept turning about. Finally the canon fired and the shot landed only a few feet away. All this time, the Indians, thinking the mule's antics were part of a show, stood still and watched the antics.
