"Songs for the Burcher's Daughter" is a novel presented as the translated (from Yiddish) memoirs of Itsik Malpesh. Alternating between Itsik's story and short chapters of "translators notes" the tale of Itsik's experiences in Russia's pogroms and eventual journey to New York and Baltimore is interspersed with our translators own love story. Eventually the two stories connect in a satisfying if somewhat predictable fashion.

I enjoyed this book because the presentation as a translated memoir was unusual and very well done, and because the plot twisted enough to keep me entertained. I never warmed up to Itsik which may be part of the reason his story has held my interest well after the final chapter.
