This book is the opening of a five-part series called Davidson's Texas. Having already read #s 2 and 3 (see below), I wasn't as impressed as with the others. Jonathan Cleary (a US Marshall) is a minor character here but becomes the lead in Book #2.

The plot opened with an interesting angle; Peter Biddleton gambled away his half of his inheritance a ranch. The man who out-played Peter was JT Flannery, who wasted no time getting to see what he had won.

The remaining half of the ranch belongs to Peters twin sister, Chloe and she isn't a happy camper. After thinking it over, she realizes it was just like her brother to gamble away a ranch hed never liked. It doesn't take long for the fireworks to hit Chloe and JT; They are two strong people used to getting their own way.

I was disappointed in Chloe on a couple of fronts; for someone who had controlled the ranch for 6 years, she sure gave into JTs leadership quickly. She also continued to forgive a brother who had never shown any gumption or understanding of the value of the ranch.

There was little back story on JT which made him hard to get to know. The story also seemed to drag a bit in the middle. However, this is a pleasant way to while away a few hours.
