This was an engrossing look at the world of the immigrant child. Much of the story recounts Ms. Simon's own personal coming-of-age, but don't let that deter you if you are tired of coming-of-age stories. (I am.) This one is definitely unique.

I was fascinated by Simon's lyrical use of language while simultaneously often appalled or horrified by her experiences. I must give the narrator, Barbara Rosenblat, 5 stars for her reading of the book. Her masterful rendition of various New York immigrant accents would make the book worthwhile even if the prose were not so delicious.
