Good Magician Humphrey's Biography ... or History of Xanth? Some would say they are the same thing.
In this, the fourteenth Xanth novel, Lacuna - daughter of the Zombie Master - has lived a drab life, and is rapidly approaching Middle-Age, which is a bad thing in Xanth. Where did she go wrong? Since the Good Magician is the only person able to answer her Question, she must travel to Hell, in a handbasket, where Humphrey awaits his appointment with the Demon X(A/N)th. But, before he gives her his Answer, she must perform her Service. Since her talent involves making words appear, he has her display an account of his life on the walls of Hell.
I guess this was a good place place for a summary of the previous thirteen books, but it threw me. From the cover description, I thought this would be all about Lacuna's quest for her Answer. Instead, The reader is presented with this synopsis, and Lacuna takes up only a small portion of the 300+ pages.
On the other hand, there were some pretty interesting revelations. Did you know the Gorgon is actually Humphrey's fifth wife? And he sired several children, some of whom have been key participants in previous novels?
While it's definitely worth the read, I believe I would have enjoyed it more, had I known what was coming.
