This is not only one of Patricia Wentworth's stand alone novels, but it is also the very first novel she wrote in 1923. I felt she was not at her best here--as if I could actually write a decent mystery myself---and some parts dragged. Still it was an interesting plot with various characters who you weren't sure of as to who were the bad guys.

The plot, which follows other common stories of the period, involves a complex international conspiracy with its leaders called Number One, Number Two, etc., something I have seen in other novels from this period. But it did have an unusual ending, which made up for the few shortcomings.

One odd thing about the book was the light gray pages and slightly darker text, which make it difficult to read. I e-mailed the publisher about it and have yet to hear back.

This novel is also published under the title, "The Astonishing Case of Jane Smith."
