American Major Lucas Winter is in London posing as a diplomat. He is actually in England searching for Theodore Frier who stole money from the American Government. Lucas believes he has tracked down Theodore's wife, Dorothy, to a home in London. Now he must romance Lady Amelia Plume in order to get closer to her stepmother Dorothy. Amelia is bored with all of the balls and the fortune hunters who want to marry her. She stumbles upon Lucas' notes about this search for her stepmother. Pretending to be a brainless heiress, Amelia agrees to let Lucas court her in order to find out why he is looking for Dorothy.

This is a strong start to Sabrina Jeffries School for Heiresses series. The characters are well drawn and the chemistry between Amelia and Lucas is tangible. Lucas dislikes Americans after his stint as a prisoner of war. He wants to find Theodore Frier and won't let Amelia stand in his way. Amelia is seeking adventure and Lucas promises to show her many kinds of adventure.

There are little notes at the beginning of each chapter from the schoolmistress Charlotte Harris and her late husband's cousin Michael. They have been corresponding for years but have never actually met. I look forward to seeing more of Charlotte and Michael has her School for Heiresses graduates each get their own story. My rating: 5 Stars.
