Story of a man whose apartment and workplace in NY City are destroyed by fire, so he takes a job arranged by his brother, as a member of the City's first police force. His work as a bartender has made him observant, and a good judge of character, with the ability to detect lies, and he eventually realizes being a 'copper' might be his calling. The plot involves solving the deaths of several Irish children.
