This is one of my favorite ghost stories. Gothic in tone, but not gory or menacing. There are chilling sections but also unexpected and satisfying plot twists, along with some humor. I read it for the first time when I was in high school. The novel deftly weaves together a story of young love, ghosts, secret histories, and an interesting perspective on the civil war. A definite page turner for me and very enjoyable read.
