The Primrose Path
This story, serialized originally in 1875 in The Shamrock, has now been reprinted several times together with a short story titled Buried Treasures. It is a tragedy of good versus evil: evil brought about through trusting too much in John Barleycorn. After a lecture in the early chapters on the amorality of imbibing in liquor, one can readily see what the plot portends. A quote from Shakespeares Macbeth comes to mind: By the tingling of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes. This is read easily in a single sitting. It is a wonder that it was not reprinted for over 100 years.

Buried Treasures
This short story was written in 1875 just after The Primrose Path. A young man is denied his loves hand by her father. First, he must have £100. He and his friend discover a buried treasure, but recovering it is not so easy. It is an interesting little tale with an abrupt denouement that allows the reader to interpolate his or her own ending. One interpretation would make this story a counterpoint to The Primrose Path.
