This book is somewhat more of a character study than the more traditional thrillers posed by Harris's earlier books: while it does have some murders and gore, it focuses much more on the who and why than on the action itself. A notable exception is the ending, which (unlike the film based on this book) is really quite graphic. (The film's ending is extremely different in all respects.)

I personally found this to be a fascinating read, but also recognize that its divergence in tone and ending from the previous novels may put off some readers. That said, if you liked the previous novels and want to know what makes Hannibal Lechter tick... this is the way to find out.
