Edward Mannion, distiguished, handsome, middle-aged munitions manufacturer, was the father of an only child from whom he had lived apart after his wife died. They had correspondent while Olivia had been at school, at camp, at the university. Now they were awkwardly sharing a house in London, bickering. Olivia encounters a young man who had threatened her father and who, perhaps, meant to destroy him.
