I was captivated by this charming fictional story about an older U.S. veteran, Sheldon Horowitz, who has traveled to Norway with his granddaughter, Rhea, and her husband, Lars. The story is told through Sheldon who frequently escapes into fantasy conversations and experiences with family and friends who are no longer alive. There is also a young child, Paul, accompanying Sheldon on his adventurous journey after Paul's mother is murdered outside Sheldon's apartment. It touches on the loss of a son in the Vietnam War, the loss of a father/son relationship and what it means to be Jewish post WWII. I originally thought this might be similar to the humorous "Ove" but it feels a bit darker. Still a very entertaining read with enough to keep you guessing about what is real and what is just in his mind.
