This book does an incredible job of evoking Dickens' London. I didn't know until I was finished that it was "informed" by Bleak House. To get the most out of this book it might help to read Bleak House first, although The Solitary House was certainly page turning for me on its own. I enjoyed the chapters told from the omniscient point of view, but had a little trouble with Hester's Narrative. If you're irritated by changing perspectives be forewarned, though I felt like it was worth it overall. A wonderfully spooky mystery with some very graphic violence against women and children.
