The author takes readers back to Smoke River area in this novel. Sheriff Hawk Rivera is called on to protect a suffragette who comes to his town to speak. Caroline MacFarlane is committed to following in her mother's footsteps, even if it is not a particularly healthy career path.

Caroline has a companion, Fernanda, who often opens the chapter. I found this to be irritating. She only reiterated things that were obvious from the text.

I just didn't buy into the reason Caroline thought she would never marry. This is supposed to be a secret that has scarred Caroline. Then, when she has an opportunity to spend a night with Hawk, she doesn't turn him down. So much for a terrible secret.

The story has a mystery that pulls the reader through the pages.
