This is an ambitious book and reminds me of Herbert's Dune in a few ways. I think it isn't perfect; the switches in point of view that occur a few times along the way aren't quite right to me somehow. But overall it always held my interest. The main character, an antihero, and his growth and development morally and magically, was captivating. I am going to look for the author's prior novel set in this world, The Anvil of the World, to see if I like it.
