Draw Manga Extreme

This book is great for the tween who is interested in drawing. It has easy to understand instructions and many illustrations that take you step by step through the character designing process. It clearly explains and shows examples of differences between male and female body types and faces. It goes into more detail with eyes and hands. The book also gives you examples of many types of characters from kids and old guys to cat people and robots. Some of the pages have examples of backgrounds and includes blank pages for practicing. This book comes with a kit of drawing materials a soft eraser, fine tip marker, pencils, mini markers and a ruler.

All and all it sounds pretty good. Unfortunately, I dislike the art style this person is trying to teach. Yes, the characters have big eyes, but only some of them have small mouths and there is no sophistocation to the art. These characters remind me of old school Megaman. Each character has a big head, big hands and enormous feet. They look more like Bratz than any manga I've ever seen.

I must say 'though that the book offers a great deal of encouragement about striking out on your own to discover your own style. This and the included materials makes it a great gift for someone who has no real clue where to start drawing. I can't really use it. That's just me.
