The age range for this book says 4-8 but I would say children much younger than that will enjoy this book. It's the story of 2 boys of different races who speak in one word sentences and become friends. You have to really get into the reading of this book because it is all in how enthusiastic the reader is in reading it. We have gotten it out from the library numerous times and now will be making it part of our permanent home library (that means very high marks in our house). My 18 month old loves anticipating what's going to come next and learning about the feelings of the characters through my "dramatic" reading of the story. I've also heard that teachers use this book as a teaching tool for punctuation and ESL teachers use this in their classes too. I believe it has also won some awards. Like other Chris Raschka books, the first time you read it, it may feel a bit awkward, and the drawings may seem primitive. But by the second or third time through you will develop a rhythm for how to read it in your own style and you will find yourself reading the mood of the drawings as much as the words.
