Ugh. I was obsessed with Redwall until I hit this book. It's definitely /different/ from the rest of the series, in slight progression of plot. But I was incredibly disappointed with the way they treated this orphaned outcast. Despite all of his best efforts, to the very end, the citizens and denizens of Redwall just don't simply seem to care. They'd rather hold onto their prejudices and not throw a wrench into their cultural assumptions. Because, heaven forbid change is possible.
The one time I didn't feel like Jacques was doing it right... it's a good story, but a tragic one. And if you want to see something different from Redwall, this is for you. But, don't expect to be happy about the outcome.
