Colin is an eight year old boy when he witnesses his parents death. He and his two younger brothers Decker and Greydon are placed in a workhouse for orphaned, unwanted children. No one comes forward to claim them. As the oldest, Colin unsuccessfully tries to keep his brothers together.

The author does a wonderful job of letting you know the type of person Colin will grow up to be. I couldn't wait to meet him and he didn't disappoint. He's never stopped looking for his brothers.

Colin vows to bring the people responsible for his parents deaths to justice and the story unfolds into a fast paced story with an intricate plot, multi-dimensional characters, intrigue and good secondary characters. The villains are not over the top but genuinely creepy.

The heroine, Mercedes is introduced in a unique and interesting way. She's emotionally strong with deep rooted fears. You can feel her helplessness and strength which made her a very likeable character.

There were times when I wondered why the main characters didnt ask and tell why they did certain things (why Mercedes took the money, for example). Had they done so, they could have avoided a lot of pain; but probably the book wouldnt have been as good.
