This is the first in a series about Sister Rose Callahan, a Shaker woman in 1930's Kentucky during the Depression. I read the book primarily because I didn't really know anything about the Shaker religion and beliefs and was interested in this now nearly-defunct sect, and the book does indeed provide a lot of that information. It has an interesting mystery and is well-written, which I gave it high points for, but I didn't personally really "connect" with the main character, which I have to do in order to really enjoy a series. As it's a fairly quick, easy read, I would recommend it for anyone with an interest in Shakers and if you and Sister Rose get along well *g* there are a few more books in the series to entice you. :)
