In this book, the first of the Stephanie Plum series, we meet Stephanie Plum, a lady who is looking for a new job since she lost her old job as a lingerie buyer. Unable to find any other job, she ends up in her cousin Vinnie's office. He is a bail bondsman and she becomes a bounty hunter.

She's got no idea how to do the bounty hunting gig but she has no money, loses her new car to repossession and has started to hock all her small appliances to stay afloat. She finds out there is a large reward for Joe Morelli, with whom she has a small history that started in his father's garage and resulted in, many years later, her running him over with her father's Buick. Now he's back in her life as a bail jumper and she's ready to bring him in. Except she's not sure how to do it. In the mean time, she is learning the ropes on small time jumpers and getting tips from Ranger, another bounty hunter. She's also run afoul of the local boxing champ, who turns out to be a crazy psycho who gets his kicks from hurting and degrading women. So, she's chasing Morelli while she has look over her shoulder to make sure the boxer doesn't get her first.

It was a funny read. Some of the humor seemed a bit forced. But there it was still enough to keep me turning the pages and there were a few times I'd laugh out loud and get strange looks from my husband. Stephanie seemed "real" and I could relate to her. I didn't get her connection to Morelli. The chemistry just wasn't happening for me. There were a few times in the book when I was just like "MACE HIM ALREADY!!" But alls well that ends well. She collects her "body money" and solves the crime at the same time. The ending was a not as predictable as I thought it was going to be. On to book 2.
