Although I'd never read anything by the other authors, I purchased this book because of Carla Kelly. She tells wonderful stories -- especially ones about Christmas and holiday traditions in England.
CHRISTMAS EVE PROPOSAL (Carla Kelly)
While the ship he serves on is in dry-dock, Royal Navy Master Ben Muir takes a room near a student he is tutoring for 3 weeks. He meets a young woman he finds fascinating, Mandy (of the restaurant Mandy's Rose) who serves as waitress. Muir finds out she is the illegitimate daughter of a Lord; when Muir defends Mandy, he upsets the barely-balanced tension between daughter and father. A masterful tale.
THE VISCOUNT'S CHRISTMAS KISS (Georgie Lee)
The premise of this story seemed so improbable that I found the rest of the story hard to accept. Gregor insulted his dance partner (Lily) years before (this is because his father insisted he do so!). Now he wants to make amends; will Lily forgive him? Who cares?
WALLFLOWER, WIDOW...WIFE (Ann Lethbridge)
Widow Cassie and her two step-daughters are in dire straits; they are hiding from Cassie's adult stepson. They live quietly and simply on one of the estates of the Earl of Portmaine. His son Adam (a widower) is going around the properties, checking through the ledgers. While on one property, he meets Cassie and the children and takes an interest. When the stepson finds Cassie, things turn bad quickly.
I was surprised to see such an erotic sex scene in a Christmas anthology.
