This is challenging but rewarding reading; fantasy that focuses on characters not on magic and action. There's a large cast of characters in this series, but the multi-volume series has room enough to develop many of them.

You definitely should read this series from the beginning, rather than trying to start with a later book. I even went back and reread the earlier books because I couldn't remember them well enough.

I really loved this book.
