I freely admit I'm not the target audience for this book (age 38, not a teen) and I didn't know it connected to a previous series. I found the too perfect family in the beginning unbelievable, the intentional obfuscation of good guy/bad guy frustrating, and the amount of physical abuse doled out to a young teen horrible. I'm generally not a squeamish reader - Dexter is a new favorite - and I read lots of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. I just didn't like this book.
