Virginia Valian discusses how subtle and totally pervasive gender-role conditioning from birth affects how women are perceived and how they perceive themselves, relative to their male peers. Specifically, the focus is on how even very well-meaning individuals (and both men and women) tend to be less likely to acknowledge a woman as a leader, or to perceive her as a competent contributor, such that a woman who is acknowledged in this way generally has had to put in substantially more effort than a male peer who has attained the same position.

Overall what this book very successfully gives you is an understanding of the problem (backed with numerous specific examples), which is definitely the first step in working on it. However, the author has relatively few suggestions to offer in how to overcome it, except to suggest that you give 110% to everything you work on, in order to receive 100% of the recognition you deserve.
