Very clever--love the Shakespearean vibe.
Tonight I see you in a silent mode Or just withdrawn or deep in pensive dreams; I long to mine so promising a lode, A vein elusive, rich, but hid from view. I reach out, you brush my hand away, Half-irritated, half-abstractedly. Then, sullenly, resentment mounts its sway, And I draw back, at once in doubt of you. Love, why can't I your fellow traveler be? Why linger in those realms so far away? I've paid the price, some thoughts belong to me, A loyal Sancho Panza, tried and true. I'd like to take a pick and hack and dig Within that stubborn mine distant from me Or build a derrick like an oil rig To drill and find if secrets there accrue. Your dreamy eyes of blue, half-lidded now, Should turn and gaze directly into mine. You really should recall an early vow And give to me what is my rightful due. I turn away and scold my greedy soul That would make you my prisoner, always Dependent on my whim and on my dole-- A slavish churl from whom, in truth, I'd flee. But still! What mysteries lie within your thoughts? Dare you recall that vixen Anne Marie? Or long for ventures you once sought Before you housed and humbled here with me? Did someone hurt or slight you on this day? Or are you hugging close some bitter wound? Then won't you turn to me and softly say That nothing matters if we two agree. Perhaps your thoughts are of philosophy Abstruse; you think I cannot comprehend; Ot do I just confuse your apathy With depths not safe to delve too deeply in? And then a dread thought coils within my brain And fills me with a dark and mute despair: That my possessiveness has leached and drained Some eloquent, sweet flow and left us With a hateful passiveness, a dual paralysis Too hard to bear, a stillness heavy, weighing On stagnant, weighted, empty air. Or even worse: What if I mine a barren field or well Only to find--THERE'S REALLY NOTHING THERE! |
