What did I say wrong? How can things that just rip families apart so cruely, mend them together like new? We had to bring Kaylee in to the hosplital, but nothing cancer related. I remembered Kami here with us, talking with Bram, playing games. And now they're both gone. The day before Kami died, I remember to colorfully, and too well. Kami never just did anything she was told. She had to ask why, and question it. Why did she need to be educated and get a job and live a life? Why does she need to clean her room if she knows for a fact it'll just be messy all over again? She asked all these things and the only thing that never bothered her was why she was here. She just didn't understand what she needed to do to actually be here, live here, pursue a life here. She touched so many peoples lives, I'll just never understand. She touched so many lives, and then is hit by a careless, drunk, fool, who will never understand or appreciate the beautiful life of my daughter that has touched so many people. I hate him for that. I despise him for that. I cry nights and nights not knowing how it will affect my family or hurt us or think what Kami would want us to do. None of us have even gone in her room. Kami would havesaid for us to have moved on.
"It's just stuff." She would say, a laugh in her voice, "Why are you keeping it?" And for the memory of that, knowing she would say that, I cling to her room, her smell, her things. Sitting and remebering this, I hear a crash, and realize I've left Kaylee alone and I was meaning to talk to her. I find her crumpled, moaning in pain next to the attic stairs, and nearly shriek.
Gently I pick her up and hold her, "Kaylee, what where you doing?" She knows perfectly well she's not allowed in the attic without one of us, "Sweetie did you fall off the stairs?" She nods slowly, holding back tears. I have to ask, "What where you doing up there?"
She sniffs, tears slowly spilling out of her eyes, "I was looking for Kami." she whispers sharly, her voice raised in sadness. I hold her tighter, the only thing I can do these days.
I press my head against hers and rock my body slowy, her in my arms, rocking with me. "Me too," I whisper back, "We're all looking for her."
Kaylee broke her leg, not a cracked bone, but a broken one. I still wonder why she never cried after she fell, I still wonder how Kami saw the world, and envied how she lived her life. I still wonder if Kaylee will find Kami, and how we will sleep at night knowing the name Kami will never be called in this house again. I wonder alot of things, and hope I never lose these precious memories. Memories of my daughters, together and laughing. I hope, because of Kami, we can all live our lives better and fuller. Not to mourn a death, but celabrate a life.
I remember all these things, and I will never forget them. I will remember as Kaylee walks with a limp, and she walks with a limp to this day.
