One day, I suspect, the monsters will come out from under the bed. Fed up with the dust, the creaking overhead, and the boredom of trying to match lost socks, they will come out. Out onto braided the rug. Out into the daylight. Where they can be plainly seen, and heard, and laughed at by a race of giant children. One day, I imagine, the beasts that hide in the closet will undertake a self-imposed Diaspora. Victims of neglect, with nothing to keep them company but chiming hangers and antique sneakers, they will reveal themselves at last – to the snickering and ridicule of the older and wiser tenants. One day, I believe, the Boogey Man will make the long slow ascent of the basement stairs. Summiting at the kitchen door. Banished from a realm no longer cloaked in shadows of black; the fire lost from his eyes and the shriek from his voice. He’ll join the others – the monsters and the creatures – who once held sway in countless kingdoms and ventured out nightly to quicken the beating of small hearts and tug at blanket corners. But no more. They will sullenly, soberly file out a million doors into a million neighborhoods. The down the quiet streets. Fading away. Gone. And the grown children will follow, not long behind. Laughing and shouting in their new found bravery. And their new world. And, I fear, that’s when the real horrors will pounce.
