Yes, it's that time of year again.  Time to consider the 2016 Mystery Challenge.  IF it's something the others would still like to have, I'll put one together.

I thought as a tribute to past efforts by Cheryl (spuddie), LeeAnne (beanbean) and Becky (beanie5) we might go with things from past challenges.  The Mystery challenges began in 2009 so I looked them over and picked two categories from each year since the beginning, not including 2015.  This year will be my last effort at a challenge for a while.  I do enjoy the mystery challenge as well as the cozy challenge.  The mystery challenge for the diversity and the cozy for the fun.

When I tried the first mystery challenge it got me to try a couple of sub genres that I wasn't interested in reading and introduced me to new authors too.  It always surprises me to see someone says I'll do it but I'm not going to read THAT category!

We belong to PBS a place where we can get books from friends in a swap.  We can pick something that a friend has said they enjoyed.  We can avoid something that a friend has said they didn't care for it.  I'm not that fond of Brit mysteries but have found some great things to read by picking one up for a challenge.

Please let mer know here if you're interested in a mystery challenge for next year.

Geri - even though I am awful when it comes to finishing the challenges, I am still interested! Sounds good!

Geri,

Even though I fail miserably at finishing the challenges, I am always up for a new one. It starts me thinking about different types of mysteries and has helped me find new authors that I really enjoy.

Okay, I tried to post a message here yesterday and, obviously, it did not work!!!  Funnily enough it acted as though it did.

Like Jeanne, I am not always a "finisher" of the challenges, I do love them.  I am always very excited in December to gather my books and I get off to a pretty good start, then somewhere about April I seem to get off on another tangent.  Saying all this, I need to see my list for this year and then go thru the books I have read and see if there is anything I am able to plug in!!

My vote ,Geri, is YES especially if you are willing to create it for another year.

Phew!  I wasn't sure if it would be popular for one more time.  I like that the challenge pushes me to try something a bit different, find a new author or decide I really don't like this type of story!  For a personal challenge last year I was reading books from around the world.  Before that I wasn't that interested in reading books from other countries!  I was limiting myself without realizing it.  I found a great series that was only five books, didn't lose their oomph and took me to American Samoa.  You know it's good when you're sorry to read the last page.

Geri, just wondering if you would be interested in doing something similiar to Alice's challenge.

I always have a problem finishing challenges, but they do give me an incentive to read new books, new authors and take books from my TBR out to finally read. Love my cozies but also like to try other types of mysteries. I see from above that there are others who also don't finish the challenges. Some are involved in more than one challenge, etc.. I wouldn't mind doing yours and Alice's challenge in 2016.

Just a suggestion and if not okay with you and others, then that is okay.
Bronze Medal -- read 5 categories
Silver Medal -- read 10 categories
Gold Medal -- read 15  categories
Diamond Medal -- read  20 categories
Platinum Medal -- read all 25 categories
Titanium Medal - read all 25 categories plus Bonus

Oh Connie --- BRONZE is the medal for me (hee hee)!!!

When I checked my 2015 Challenges, it is the Historical Mystery Challenge I have "almost" finished.  My Mystery/Thriller one is very dismal. In looking it over, I believe I have even gotten rid of a few of the books I was meant to read for certain categories!!  When I did my big TBR purge they went by the wayside.

Geri --- glad to see we are gaining momentum with the regulars around here.  You know me, I will always PRETEND I am doing the Challenge --- I still think I may be able to fill in a few categories for 2015.

I love doing the challenges as it lets me root through stacks of old books and Kindle books I've had for ages. There's always a category or two that really makes me wince because I don't read that particular genre, but I force myself to find something. Sad to say that I never learn to like them, lol.

I appreciate that you and Alice take the time to create the challenges for us and hope they continue no matter who does them.

Connie, I could do something like that.  I was going to have 12 categories in the main part and six in the bonus section.  It would be easy enough to add the medals for what someone has accomplished.

Since I plan on 12 categories it could be

Bronze Medal -- read 3 categories
Silver Medal -- read 6 categories
Gold Medal -- read 12  categories
Diamond Medal -- read  12 categories plus 2 bonus
Platinum Medal -- read 12 categories plus 4 bonus
Titanium Medal - read 12 categories plus 6 bonus

Sounds good.  Could we have an option that allows us to put in books we have been wanting to read rather than searching for one to fit a certain category?  Just a thought!   I'm having trouble finding books I want to read in some of the categories this year.

R E K, I have to think of how I could do it.  Maybe throw in an option spot.

I was planning on 12 categories and six bonus selections.  Might have a 13th category - having trouble finding something you want to read in a category - eliminate it and select your option.  Hmmm I think I like that myself.  devil

I would be up for another challenge.  Sad to say I failed at the 2015 one.  I know there is still time but I just gave up.  But I wouldn't mind trying again!  Thanks for putting this together!

I really enjoy the challenge! Like most here, it pushes me to read books I wouldn't otherwise - and I've found some I really like in categories I didn't care for. I'm still plugging away at this year's challenge - and thinking I *might* finish this year!

I am new to pbs, just joined today as an official member.  I would love to sign up for the 2016 mystery challenge. My son is sick, he has a rare brain disease ALD and is bedridden. I spend a lot of time sitting and caring for him so this would be the perfect distraction for me. I love mysteries. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it.  God Bless !

Hi Lisa and welcome to PBS!  The 2016 challenge won't start until January.  But, we do have a 2015 mystery challenge and if you like cozies we also have the 2015 cozy challenge.  It's a personal thing, an attempt to get people to try different things.  If you don't read all the categories or don't finish by December there's nothing to say you can't keep reading the categories in January.  In fact I put it together and still have three books to read in the mystery challenge.  It's to have fun, not be a burden.

Lisa ~ welcome!!  Yes, you will find friends here.  I'm so sorry about your son.   Believe me, reading has been a great source of distraction therapy for me over the years and I hope you will find it to be so for you.

Welcome, Lisa!  You'll find lots of friends and support here.  To echo Joy, I know reading has been both a distraction and an escape for me through some of the bad times in life.

As Geri said, wander over to  "What Are We Reading This Month" (the exact heading changes each month).  We do talk about books, but lots of other stuff as well.  Just be prepared to increase your TBR pile with all the books others are reading!!
