My church book club is looking for new books to read this year, we are considering some fiction to mix in with our bible study type books.  Any recommendations?  I was considering suggesting The Red Tent, The Shack, and  Christ the Lord: Out of Egyptby Anne Rice but I haven't read any of them.

I don't know if you are looking for non-fiction only or if you might be interested in fiction. Karen Kingsbury is a wonderful writer along with Deborah Raney. Their books really have lots of deep thought-provoking scenarios.

I also like books by Bill Wiese and On Guard by Craig. I don't know his first name. Very good books!

I would suggest anything by Angela Hunt, Lisa Samson or Susan Meissner

Also the Yada Yada Prayer Group series by Neta Jackson

Margaret, I would definitely NOT read The Red Tent for a church book club.  It is NOT Christian fiction.  Depending on the nature of your group, some people would consider several of the scenes to be very graphic.  It does not follow the Biblical story.  If you can set aside what you know and pretend that this is NOT a story about the Biblical patriarchs that you know, respect and love, then it's a very good fictional story set in Biblical times.  But I had a hard time keeping that perspective.  Read the PBS reviews and you'll see that a lot of Christians consider it offensive.

Francine Rivers is another good choice.  I can see Redeeming Love starting some good discussion.

Our church book club has read Francine Rivers' Redeeming Love and it was wonderful. We also loved Home to Harmony by Philip Gulley.

We read non-fiction as well and I would recommend How Coffee Saved My Life by Ellie Roscher and The Hole in our Gospel by Richard Stearns.

I am going to join in with Christa in reporting that The Red Tent is not really a book for a Christian reading group. I started it thinking it was along the line of Orson Scott Card's books about the women of the Old Testament (which I liked A LOT), but quickly got my eyes opened. In my opinion, it almost mocked faith and OT patriarchs. This is one book I was actually sorry I read.

A big thank you  to all of you, we don't meet again until Sept. amd now I have some great suggestions for the group.  I will let you know what we end up with.
