Denise Fleming is an author of children's books who was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1950. She graduated in illustration (after moving courses from advertising design) from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Her first book, In the Tall, Tall Grass, was critically well received and in 1994 its sequel, In the Small, Small Pond, received a Caldecott Honor.
